The Motorola Atrix 4G was one of the most interesting devices I saw at CES this year. I mean, the 4G capable smartphone with a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor is interesting and all, but it’s hardly unique. What makes the whole thing special is the optional laptop accessory which Motorola calls a Webtop.

Basically the dock looks like an 11.6 inch laptop. But it’s powered entirely by the smartphone. Just stick the Atrix 4G in a docking station in the rear and you can power up the laptop and run a custom Linux environment with a full version of the Firefox web browser and the ability to access apps and data stored on your phone.

When Motorola unveiled the Atrix 4G and Webtop, the company was close-lipped about pricing. But a member of the Android Central Forums says a Motorola rep promises the Webtop accessory will cost about $150.

The phone will also apparently hit Best Buy locations before other stores, and the Atrix 4G is apparently one of the first 4G phones scheduled to hit the AT&T network in the US.

This is all in the rumor category for now, but the news appears to come from a Best Buy employee, so I’m going to put it in the plausible rumor category.

  1. This is actually the biggest threat to netbooks. Or should I say, this is also the biggest threat to tablets. As in, who the funk needs one when you have this combo?

  2. While this is a great start, what I’d actually love to see is a phone/tablet/netbook combination device. Let me dock my smartphone inside a tablet with a high-res capacitive touch screen (active digitizer would be an even bigger bonus). Then have another keyboard accessory that the tablet screen docks to. You’d essentially have three devices, but only one data plan and one set of apps.

Upcoming improvements to smartphone hardware and storage capacity should make this possible, but it would need one heck of a slick OS and UI to bring it all together. Apple is already too heavily invested in their iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air to pursue something like this, but it would need to be another major player to bring in the necessary developer audience.

    1. The webtop accessory ONLY works with the Atrix 4G. It’s not meant to work with other smartphones, as the custom OS sits on the phone itself. That doesn’t mean other smartphone makers won’t copy this, and I think it’s a great idea.

  3. Definitely a good price range to me. Depends on how well they final software works though
