HP has filed for a trademark on the term “HP Touchpad.” That could mean the company doesn’t plan to call its upcoming webOS tablet the PalmPad, which is great news because that’s just a silly name.

On the other hand, TouchPad doesn’t seem all that great either — especially considering it’s what we call the little touch-sensitive area below the keyboard on hundreds of laptop computers. I suppose “HP TouchPad” could just be what the computer makers wants to call the touchpads on its products — and for some reason it’s filing for trademarkt protection so that Lenovo can’t start referring to its TrackPoint system as an “HP Touchpad.”

That doesn’t seem altogether likely though, since the trademark application mentions tablet computers among other products.
