Microsoft’s Ben Rudolph was lucky enough to score some hands-on time with the ASUS EP121 tablet prior to CES, and he’s posted his experience from the past fortnight over at the Windows Experience Blog. The EP121 sports packs some pretty serious hardware into its 2/3 inch frame: and Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, and . Its 12.1″ 1366×768 display is clad in Gorilla Glass — which should add plenty of durability to the tablet. The EP121 weighs in at about two and a half pounds.

ASUS has supplied an integrated webcam, two USB ports, a mini-HDMI out, multi-format card reader, and a stylus which stores neatly inside the EP121’s housing.Hardware buttons to control volume, call up the on-screen keyboard, lock screen orientation, and fire up Windows 7’s Flip 3D application switcher are built in as well.

Rudolph also shared some timings, and they’re fairly impressive. The EP121 booted in about 19 seconds (cold), shut down in 17 seconds, and both slept and resumed in a single second. The tablet also posted respectable WEI scores — processor, RAM, and hard disk marks were all 5.6 or better, and the Intel graphics were a few points behind — at 3.4 for desktop graphics and 4.9 for 3D.

As for battery life, Rudolph reports about 3.5 hours while using a variety of applications and watching video. Not bad, considering the EP121 is running a full desktop OS and packing a pretty powerful CPU under the hood.

One reply on “ASUS EP121 Windows 7 tablet gets the hands-on treatment”

  1. Great article. I’d really like to see more extensive results of battery usage. 3.5 hours for common applications is just okay. Honestly, that aspect has be on the fence about this tablet.
