I’ll be honest. I have no idea why unboxing videos are so popular. But for some reason people love to see new gadgets taken out of a box for the first time, and so to help fill that demand, I’ve posted an unboxing video for almost every product I’ve reviewed since the Asus Eee PC 701. Since I’m not entirely sure I understand the magic behind the appeal of the unboxing, I can’t quite decide if this is cheating or not… but Asus has posted an unboxing video of its own product.

The Eee Slate Ep121 is a 12 inch Windows tablet that’s set to start shipping later this month. The folks at Asus clearly have a few units lying around the corporate offices, and a member of the Asus team has put together a video showing what it looks like when you take it out of the box.

The video confirms that the EP121 comes with a carrying case, stylus, power adapter, and Bluetooth keyboard. while the guy in th evideo says it boots in 10-15 seconds, the video counter shows it actually takes more like 25 seconds to get a usable desktop. But that’s still pretty good by Windows standards. You can probably thank the tablet’s Intel Core i5 processor and fast SSD for that.

You can check out the full video after the break.

  1. Hi. Thanks for a further vid about the ep 121. I think this tab got very nice specs but a missing integrated UMTS modul and a battery life of 3h aren´t up to date.

    1. Battery life reported was around 3.5 hours and that may be the minimum as another review reported just over 5 hours.

Discrepancy may be due to the fact that Core i5 processors have the Intel Turbo Boost for over clocking.

But the only way they can give it significantly longer run time is by either increasing it’s size and weight with a much larger battery or reduce it’s specs to use less power!

There is a possibility that they will release a dock similar to the one they are offering for the EP101 Transformer and that would add an additional battery for longer run times and of course let you use the system like a notebook.

Keep in mind that Intel ATOMs and ARM based Slates may get longer run times but they are also far less powerful.

While the EP121 is basically intended as a laptop replacement and that means it doesn’t need to be completely mobile. But also a UMTS module would cause the system to use more power and further reduce it’s run time and most people these days can just use their phones as either tethered 3G or turn them into a WiFi AP when needed. Not to mention all the places you can go and sit that also offer free public wifi.
