The Archos 9 is a Windows 7 slate computer with an 8.9 inch touchscreen display and a 60GB hard drive… or at least that’s true of the version you can buy today. But the folks at Blogee report that the Archos 9 is about to get an update that will replace the hard drive for a 32GB solid state disk.
Solid State disks are often a good match for tablets, since they have no moving parts to damage and tablets are designed to be held — which means they move around a lot more than laptop or desktop computers. SSDs also tend to use less power than hard drives, which can prolong battery life. Some SSDs also have much faster read and write speeds than hard drives, but it’s not clear at the moment whether the Archos 9 will come with a high performance SSD or not.
It look s like the rest of the specs will remain pretty much unchanged. The new Archos 9 will have a 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.2 GHz Intel Atom Z510 processor, and 1GB of RAM.
Lord, I hope the make the thing useful. This tablet is just a particularly poor machine. It’s really ugly, it’s slower than all get out, the screen has poor contrast and color and has almost no viewing angle, and the digitizer is really inaccurate. I can’t believe they’re stilling selling them.
That does sound like an ARCHOS product….at least it comes with the newest Windows OS
