The WeTab is an interesting German tablet with an 11.6 inch display and a custom Linux operating system based on MeeGo Linux with a custom user interface including a sidebar that lets you navigate through apps and web pages, and widgets that can run on the home screen. The widgets can be anything from an application launcher to a dynamic app that shows interactive elements from an application or web site such as an RSS feed, calendar, YouTube videos, or other content.

While the WeTab isn’t available for purchase in the US, the team behind the tablet have released the developer tools for creating widgets for the platform — as well as the entire operating system which you can download and install in a virtual machine.

Since the OS is based on MeeGo, you can use the basic MeeGo Linux developer tools to write apps for the platform. But the WeTab UI is one of the most unique implementations of MeeGo I’ve seen. While the WeTab OS image that the company is making available right now is designed to run in a virtual machine, I wouldn’t be surprised if some users figured out how to use the SDK tools to get WeTab running on third party tablets.
