There’s a rumor making the rounds that Samsung is preparing to launch a new 10 inch tablet in March or April. While the company’s best known tablet at the moment is a 7 inch model called the Galaxy Tab, which runs Google Android, the upcoming model would reportedly be a Windows 7 tablet.

But that’s not that unusual. There are plenty of touchscreen tablets with Windows 7. What makes the rumored Samsung Gloria different is that it would have a sliding keyboard, possibly similar to the ones found on slider-style smartphones, except, you know, bigger.

There’s no word on pricing, specs, or much of anything else, and right now all we have to go on are some anonymous sources that have tipped off Pierre at Blogeee.net, but Pierre has a pretty good track record of only posting rumors that are plausible… and over the past few years a number of products I’ve heard about first at his site have eventually found their way to market.

That said, the image above is not an official picture, but rather an artist’s rendering, courtesy of Blogeee.

  1. I’d get it if it looked like the above pic, had a 5 inch screen, optical thumbpad and the Oak Trail platform (mainly for H.264 HW video acceleration and battery life). I miss my OQO. Great for traveling. Watching videos during flights or long waits.

When it comes to video playback, reliable browser experience and software, Windows is great. The smartphone OS’s just aren’t there yet.

  2. Baffling. Stupid. Asinine. That sums up my feelings about this concept. Remember the AMC Gremlin? AMC Pacer? This is such a stupid concept it’s almost beyond description. Enjoy your neck and arm physio treatments. Coming up with this desperate design says tablet = fail. It has to. It says they aren’t satisfied with with a tablet as it is meant to be, and want to create a netbook, except it’s insulting to a netbook design. Wow, this is so stupid.

    1. Actually, it’s addressing one of the reasons why Apple went with a 4:3 ratio instead of 16:9… While the 16:9 has advantages like being able to watch movies wide screen and being slimmer in one direction means you can fit it in more spaces that you would a 4:3 ratio device.

But you’ll get pretty much the same angle of use from using an iPad with an on-screen keyboard as you would with this tablet and its pop-out keyboard, idea being you can use the keyboard without taking up all of the screen in the process.

At 10″ it’s not really bigger than the iPad, but rather just has a different shape and that means different usage factors when you hold it horizontally.

But both ways it’s not very practical for the size and weight involved and of course people will eventually just get an external keyboard for when they really want to type.

Tablets make good content consumption devices, they’re just not good content creation devices.

Though ergonomically even traditional notebooks are compromises as you really should have a screen at eye level and a keyboard at around elbow level…

Remember though this is a concept image and not the final product. For all we know they could have a detachable keyboard and a kick stand for impromptu table top use that would actually be useful…
