Lineo has introduced a new technology which could lead to dramatically faster boot and resume from hibernation times on Linux-based computers, particularly those with low power processors like Atom chips. The company’s new Warp 2 technology for Atom, for example, can resume Fedora Linux 12 from hibernation on a system with an Intel Atom Z530 processor in just over 4 seconds.

The company says it could take as long as 55 seconds to do the same thing under normal conditions,w hich seems unreasonably slow to me, but 4 seconds is pretty good no matter how you slice it.

The Warp 2 system uses a Linux kernel, bootloader, and a driver that copies data from RAM to flash storage when you put your computer into hibernation, so it can be loaded more quickly when you resume.

It’s not exactly the same thing as doing a cold boot in 4 seconds on a low power computer, but it’s still pretty impressive.
