Barnes & Noble auto-resetting some rooted NOOKcolor devices

12/30/2010 at 12:47 PM by Brad Linder 2 Comments

The Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor is a $250 color eBook reader which also happens to make a pretty decent 7 inch Android tablet if you root the system to open it up to third party apps. There’s just one problem: Barnes & Noble doesn’t officially support rooted devices, and some users are reporting that they’ve experienced errors where their rooted NOOKcolor units bring up an error message and a few seconds later the device automatically reboots — and restores the factory default settings.

That means after you go through the trouble of rooting the device, installing apps, and customizing your settings, you could lose everything.

It’s not entirely clear what causes the error to occur. Many users report that it happens when visiting the Barnes & Noble Shop on their rooted NOOKcolors, but some say their tablets have been reset when they were doing something else altogether. Reading through the thread on xda-developers, it sounds like the problem may have something to do with using the Titanium Backup utility, but it’s not entirely clear at the moment.

So if you plan to root a NOOKcolor for use as an all-purpose Android tablet, you may want to proceed with caution for now.

the companies really need to stick with the “open” nature of Android and have a simple rooting option built into the system. . . don’t be jerks.

By “open”, google mean that they are open to the manufacturer not the consumer.
