Sharp has announced a release date and pricing for the company’s Galapagos tablets in Japan. The 5.5 and 10.8 inch Android tablets will go n sale December 10th for 39,800 yen and 54,800 yen respectively. That’s about $480 to $650 US, but the prices would much likely be lower if and when they’re released in the US. Electronics tend to carry heavier price tags in Japan.

The 10.8 inch model has a 1366 x 800 pixel display and a 10 hour battery. It features 802.1b/g WiFi, an 8GB microSDHC card, and weighs about 1.7 pounds.

The 5.5 inch Sharp Galapagos tablet has a 1024 x 600 pixel display, 8GB of storage, 802.11b/g/ WiFi, and a 7 hour battery. It weighs less than half a pound.

Sharp is positioning these tablets primarily as eBook readers and media devices, but they also feature web browsers and other goodies and they’re running Google Android which means that they’re likely reasonably hackable.
