If you have a hard time remembering which key combination to press to adjust the screen brightness, toggle the wireless, or make other changes on your netbook, one seller in Belgium has got the product for you: a customized Asus Eee PC 701 netbook.

What makes this Eee PC 4G stand out is the custom keyboard layout which features a combination of black and white keys — making it easier to locate the arrow keys, the volume key, brightness settings, and others.

Rather than make all of the special function keys black, the person behind this mod decided to give the keyboard a bit of a checkerboard look which makes some keys stand out — but also draws attention to the adjacent white keys. It’s not like you really hit the up, left, or right arrow keys all that much more often than the down key. It’s just that it’s easier to find all 4 keys when they have an attractive appareance.

The custom netbook is selling for 120 Euros, or about $169 US.Like a standard Eee PC 4G, the little guy has a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, and runs Windows XP.

  1. Just to be clear, this is a modded Eee PC 701 and is not a direct product from Asus.

The original owner is Belgium, explaining the keyboard layout (not everyone in the world uses the QWERTY layout), and is trying to sell it and the article is just pointing out the prominent changes the owner has made.

  2. The keyboard is a mixture of the black edition and the white edition. Changing the keys is not ideal and users need to re organize the way they type.

  3. AZERTY is a form of keyboard layout. Give me a Dvorak keyboard model and I’m sold.

  4. They had the right idea different colors but I think they needed better color choices. Maybe white and light grey for F1-12, dark grey for the arrow keys. Maybe forget about the other keys being different.

Nice idea, just badly implemented on that keybaord because it is so jarring and so many keys were highlighted.

  5. why did they swap the Q and A keys? that’s confusing. and why is the M key next to enter? I like the coloring, but not mixing around the keys.

  6. It looks both cheap and dumb. Asus already makes the key “6” and arrow keys stand out for better navigation.
