Earlier this year we found out that T-Mobile was going to institute a soft data cap of 5GB on its 3G data plans. But while other US wireless carriers charge users extra fees when they go over their data caps, T-Mobile will continue to let you get online — you’ll just experience much slower speeds.

After about 6 months of waiting, it looks like T-Mobile is finally getting ready to put its new plan into action. TmoNews reports that the new data throttling plan takes effect this Friday.

While this may come as bad news for some T-Mobile customers, the company suggests that fewer than 1 percent of their customers currently use more than 5GB of data per month right now, so most people won’t be affected at all. As for those of you who are heavy data users, would you rather have your speed throttled back or have the option of paying extra if you need more data?

  1. If this change will affect less than 1% of their customers, why are they bothering to do this?
