Samsung’s first 10 inch netbook with a dual core processor is now shipping in the US. The Samsung NF310 has the same curvy design as the Samsung NF210, but while the NF210 is available exclusively through Sam’s Club in the States, the NF310 is starting to pop up all over the place. Amazon and TigerDirect are both offering the netbook for $399.

If that price sounds a bit steep, it’s only because you haven’t heard all the specs yet. Not only does the Samsung NF310 have a 1.5GHz Intel Atom ND550 dual core CPU, but it also has a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel HD display.

The mini-laptop has 1GB of DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive, a 6 cell battery, and runs Windows 7 Starter Edition.

Unfortunately it’s saddled with integrated GMA 3150 graphics, but Intel and Samsung promise that the dual core processor is fast enough to handle local playback of 720p HD videos on that HD screen. Higher resolution 1080p videos are still out of reach, and I suspect that HD Flash video will be hit or miss at best.

Update: It looks like this model might have NVIDIA graphics, but I’m waiting for official word from Samsung on that.

Update 2: Samsung tells me the NF310 has integrated Intel GMA3150 graphics and does not have NVIDIA ION.

    1. Sorry, that should be the NF310. That’s what I get for trying to edit the
post from my phone. Both models have GMA 3150 graphics.

      Sent from my phone

    2. yep same for me I just got off the phone after getting a competent rep what a bummer I was about to buy this over the 1015PN from Asus if it had ION2 based on the HD screen. Looks like Samsung sent out the wrong specs to its retailers This is the worst news since I found out the Asus 1015PN had the puny 1024 x 600 screen. I will resume waiting for a 12′ netbook with a N550 and full ION2 (1215PN only gets 6 hours because of nettop atom ACK)

      1. exactly, that’s the right formula, I’m wondering why nobody has done it yet.

        1. Love to see i’m not alone in expecting a high rez 10 inch with killer battery life. If the 1015PN had the high rez screen it would be perfect. Hope it happens soon.

  1. Both Amazon and Tiger are explicit about NVIDIA graphics. Are we thinking both may be wrong?

  2. am I missing something here?”Ideal for Gaming and Multimedia – With dedicated NVIDIA graphics with 1GB of memory plus more natural and realistic 3D SRS Premium Sound.”this is from Amazon.com. If it is ION and gets 9.5 hours with ION2 turned on then I am hoping someone figures out how to hack the Asus switching software onto this machine

    1. That’s interesting. I don’t remember Samsung saying anything about nvidia
graphics, and the specs aren’t very specific. I’ll check with my contacts.

      1. Something that might be useful: Your review here of the Samsung N210 with Intel GMA 3150 showed a 3.0 graphics score on the Windows Experience Index, the only lower score being the CPU. See: https://liliputing.com/2010/03/samsung-n210-areview.html

The Atom N550 has a WEI score of 3.1, according to this HP Mini review: https://liliputing.com/2010/09/hp-mini-5103-dual-core-netbook-review.html

I’m going to assume that the DDR3 RAM and HDD are not going to be below a WEI score of 3.0, as laptop DDR2 RAM and any 5400RPM SATA drive are still above 3, to my knowledge. Now, in this youtube video, the Samsung NF310 has a WEI of 3.0: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP511igFJ1U

So, I conclude one of three things:
        1) It does not have an ION2.
        2) It does have an ION2, but it was turned off for the display unit in that video or the WEI test was run with it off.
        3) that display unit was made before a hardware change.

The last seems unlikely to me, as it’s from just last month, but I don’t really know how quickly such changes tend to occur in the laptop industry.

        1. You’d be amazed at how different the pre-release units can be from the final shipping models. I saw a Samsung NF210 last month with an Atom N550 processor, even though the company has no plans to launch that particular netbook with that CPU.

That said, I’m still not sure what the real deal is with the graphics in this netbook. I have someone looking into it for me, and hope to have a real answer soon.

  3. “Unfortunately it’s saddled with integrated GMA 3150 graphics…”

Fortunately, that “misfortune” offers better battery life than other solutions and offers better driver support as well. There is no absolute comparison between NVIDIA Ion 2 and GMA 3150. They’re different, and those differences translate into one being better only in specific contexts. In fact, the lower level of video playback available to the GMA 3150 may be somewhat mitigated by the fact that Linux may be easier to get up and running (which would allow one to have a less demanding desktop that stays out of the way of video playback).

    1. Except that unlike NVIDIA ION 1, you can turn off ION2. So if you don’t want or need the graphics boost, you don’t have to use it. But if you want to get the most out of the HD display, you have the option.
