Well this can’t be good. Neofonie managing director Helmut Hoffer has resigned after he was caught writing positive reviews of the company’s WeTab 11.6 inch tablet on Amazon under fake names.

Hoffer says he wrote the reviews without consulting with management or the communications department at Neofonie, and has issued a statement saying it was a mistake not to use his own name.

The WeTab is available for pre-order in Germany, but it’s still not actually shipping. The tablet has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel capacitive toucshcreen display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3MP camera, 2 USB ports, an SD card reader and SIM card slot, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, optional 3G, and either 16GB of 32GB of storage. The tablet runs MeeGo Linux and can also handle Google Android apps. It weighs about 2.2 pounds.

The WeTab has garnered a lot of attention over the past few months, because it has a sleek design and just about all the features a tablet enthusiast who is dissatisfied with the Apple iPad could ask for (except perhaps an active digitizer and a keyboard). But you have to wonder if it’s going to live up to its promise if Hoffer felt the need to write fake reviews on Amazon.

  1. In fact the Wetab has been delivered in Germany and has met with general dismay about features not present, about software not yet ready, about being so heavy and needing a fan on board to cool it. It’s like a Pad that would be well suited the alternative world depicted in the film Brazil.

It’s against that background that the fake reviews were posted. As if to say “Not everyone is disappointed.” It has been pointed out the the first customers for this piece of half-baked junk have been treated as beta-testers.

  2. Not smart. Learn from the giants of industry.

If you want a dishonest job done right, compensate somebody under the table to do it for you.
