Intel’s upcoming Moorestown, Oak Trail, and Tunnel Creek chips will use the company’s new GMA 600 graphics, which should be significantly more powerful than the GMA 500 graphics that came with earlier Atom Z5xx series chips. That’s because GMA 500 has a clock speed of 200MHz, while GMA 600 is clocked at 400MHz.

Chippy from UMPC Portal got a chance to check out a number of tech demos last week showing some of what GMA 600 graphics can do. In one demo, a mini-laptop is playing 12 different videos at once, with no noticeably slowdown. Several other demos showed off some pretty impressive looking 3D graphics, with one computer running 3D warping effects on a real-time video feed, and another interacting to touch from a fingertip.

That said, these were all tech demos, which aren’t always indicative of real world performance. We still haven’t seen how GMA 600 stacks up on third party benchmarks, or how well it handles real games that people might actually want to play. For that, we’ll probably have to wait until review units start making the rounds.

  1. the gpu in the gma 600 is licensed from imagination tech.. is the same than you can find on a galaxy S smartphone…. = fail…

  2. There is SGX535-GPU in the GMA 600. And in the Galaxy S is SGX540-GPU! It’s two big differences. But both GPU is very good. In fact Intel’s drivers has killed this great GPU in GMA 500/600! Just look at the Project Sword on IPhone 3GS/IPhone 4/IPad (theirs GPU is SGX535, too) and all will become clear.
