Apple has unveiled its next-generation iPod touch, with many of the features that make the Apple iPhone 4 stand out. The new model is thinner than the previous iPod touch, which is saying something. It also includes the new Apple A4 chip, a high resolution Retina display, and a 3-axis gyroscope.

The iPod touch will also features a front-facing camera with support for Apple FaceTime, allowing you to make video calls to other iPhone and iPod touch uses.

There will be 3 different models, with 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB of storage respectively, with prices ranging from $229 to $399. All three models will ship with iOS 4.1, which isn’t due out until next week. And that’s when the new iPod touch will ship as well.

So what do you think? Are you still thinking about picking up an Archos Android media player or does the new iPod touch look more attractive?

You can find detailed specs after the break.

  1. Full Disclosure: I own lots of Apple stock (much less than I used to) and none of their products (much less than I used to). Releases like this explain why. Apple appears to have given up on making “nice things” and just wants the money of the average consumer. That’s great for Apple and great for me.

There’s nothing more telling about the iPod, which started off as a music player and still purports to be one, than the fact that almost nobody who “covers” it, buys it, or likes it knows about the audio components of the device or even know they should care. The Apple iPod is basically a McDonald’s Big Mac. It’s popular. It’s not very good. And, everybody can recite “what it’s got”, but nobody has any idea what’s actually in it (or wants to).

The iPod+iTunes combination is not for people who like music. It’s for people who like their emotional responses to music. The iPod is not a high quality audio player. The downloads available through iTunes tend to be (VERY) low quality files, and the iTunes database is not a very compelling way to manage a music collection (especially if it crashes on you). Fortunately, a typical consumer just doesn’t know or care, and that’s the target market for this device. In addition, most people aren’t just using the iPod as a music player, so it can get away with being a lousy one. There are higher quality options that are cheaper and batter, but people don’t buy those because they don’t want higher quality or cheaper price. They want an iPod. That works for me. I’d much rather live in a world where people make smart choices, but as long as people stay predictable silly, it’s at least easier to take your money.

Good news: If you must have an iPod and you do like music, there are a few warranty voiding soldiers out there who will upgrade your iPod for you by upgrading some of the components with something of better quality.

  2. This ipod touch is awesome, everything I would have wanted except:
    – Shoddy back camera – why only 960 x 720?
    – 3g version (I was dreaming here)

  3. Here’s my issues with the Archos units, they don’t wow me, and I have yet to use a Archos device that I really LOVED. Stats wise the Archos devices are very comparable to the iPod Touch, and are in fact better. Application environment wise, not so much. No support for the Android market without having to work around it is very off putting. Then there’s media, in which Archos really wins hands down, even though it’s a lot less expensive.

So… basically if you buy an iPod touch you’re paying the Apple Tax to have access to a much much better application market… And that means a lot more to me than you’d think. I don’t have a lot of movies encoded in bizzare file formats to balk at buying an iPod Touch…

And then there’s the whole Java issue on Android. The Oracle suit may be a bunch of BS in my mind, but it does sort of cool my jets as a developer knowing that any day, week, month, year from now Oracle can and probably will kill the Dalvik engine. Say what you will, but the law more than likely, and highly unfortunately, on the Oracle side on this one, and it’s going to be a major pain for Google to retool. Which means that they need to make some sort of announcement soon about how they’re going forward. So there’s just that little more uncertainty around the whole Android platform, which sucks because I really like it.

Oh well, the way forward is probably just to write web apps.

All in all, I think the iPod Touch may be a real winner. I don’t see any strong competition on that form factor. Archos is kind of trying to compete… With a similarly sized resistive touch screen device at a much lower price point that probably has the same deep flaws I came to hate in the last Archos 5 tablet. So we’ll see, but right now Apple still looks like it’s on top here.
