NVIDIA’s Tegra platform combines a low power ARM-based chip with a high performance graphics processor. This allows low power devices such as smartphones, portable media players, tablets, or handheld game consoles to handle HD video playback and 3D gaming without killing the battery too quickly. But as cool as the Tegra chipset is, it hasn’t shipped in many products from big-name device makers.

The biggest name in Tegra products right now is probably the Microsoft Zune HD, which shipped with a first-generation Tegra chip. NVIDIA has been pushing its next-generation Tegra 2 chipset for the past half year, but I haven’t seen any major products released with the chip yet.

But the folks at Semiaccurate say that hasn’t stopped NVIDIA from pushing on. The site reports that NVIDIA will soon announce a Tegra 3 or T30 platform. And if the tipsters are correct, NVIDIA will also announce a number of products expected to ship with the chipset.

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait until mid-2011 until Tegra 3 is unleashed, which is an awfully long time in the tech world, so some of those products might not ever make it to market.

  1. Context: Recently, NVIDIA has fallen on some tough times. For example, yesterday they posted a net fiscal loss that widened in Q2 to $141 million dollars. This really isn’t good for anybody. We need a health NVIDIA and thriving competition throughout technology markets. In the meantime, expect to hear a lot of talk about NVIDIA’s future products in upcoming months as they work to secure investor and partner confidence.

    Tegra 2 ? Where is Tegra 1 ?

Tegra was designed for Windows-CE, there was no big choice for other OS – and who wants CE…?
And the price was 30$, too expensive compared with the Intel-Atom and a new type of devices.

    I was waiting for a Tegra-Smartbook, but …. you know 🙁
