Remember when flash storage meant 16MB of memory for storing, I don’t know, maybe 4 songs that you could play on an MP3 player? Yeah, those were the days. Today you can find USB flash drives with up to 256GB of storage space. But Infinitec doesn’t think that’s enough, and the company is offering a USB device that promises infinite storage.
Of course, there’s no such thing… but the idea is that the Infinitec USB dongle isn’t actually a storage device. It doesn’t have any memory at all. Instead, it’s a WiFi capable device that allows you to connect two computers over an ad hoc WiFi network, which means you can send data from one computer to another.
The key is something that Infinitec is calling “dual WiFi,” which lets you connect a device to two separate WiFi networks at the same time. So you can connect your PC to another PC without disconnecting from the internet.
The company says the IUM (Infinite USB Memory) device works with PC, Mac and Linux. It also supports gaming consoles including the PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii.
All told, the IUM is kind of a neat idea. It doesn’t just let you copy files from one computer to another, but also lets you stream media from one PC to another. You can also share an internet connection between two devices.
But it’s a bit strange to call it the “next generation flash drive,” since it doesn’t actually store any files and isn’t much use if you don’t happen to have two devices handy.
Infinitec is selling the IUM for $129, with free shipping on orders placed before August 31st.
