A handful of folks have managed to get their hands on the new Augen GenTouch78 Android tablet which is selling for $150 at KMart. For that price, I don’t think anybody expects an iPad-like experience. But the tablet has a 7 inch display, 800MHz CPU, and runs Google Android 2.1. It sounds pretty decent for the price — on paper at least. But what about the actual user experience?

YouTube member MrJn7 has posted two videos looking at the tablet. Although the GenTouch78 is clearly made of pretty cheap plastic, it actually looks pretty nice. It even comes with a carrying case to protect the display.

On the other hand, the tablet seems a bit on the slow side, and the resistive touchscreen isn’t quite as easy to use as the capacitive multitouch displays you find on most Android devices. Fortunately it does come with a stylus.

The keyboard looks very large on the 7 inch, 00 x 480 pixel display. But you have to press pretty hard if you want to type with your fingers, or use a stylus to enter one character at a time.

Scrolling in the web browser looks a bit jerky on some pages, but pages load reasonably quickly. The YouTube video player seems to work well over WiFi.

  1. If youre comparing this to any of the android phone you will be very much so letdown. The screen ui isnt smooth and sluggish when responsive. the wifi reception is terrible in my experience. i had to sit next to my router just to get a weak signal…good luck using it in other rooms as it wont pick up a signal.

  2. I bought one at a K-Mart in Trenton New Jersey. It came with a power supply, a usb/mini usb converter cable and a leather case. It indicated a manual but none was in the box (could not open it at the store I bought it from). I will see if I can download one. I will give a review later. 🙂 It looks pretty nice.

The K-Mart also had the Reader and the Augen netbook. I believe both were about $99.

    1. Nice!

I stopped by my local KMart yesterday but they hadn’t received any yet.
Going to check again tomorrow. I’ll probably lose interest if I can’t find
      it by then. 🙂

  3. How about actually getting one to Kmart’s around the country? Still haven’t found one in #STL / St. Louis, MO – AND – was given a line today about the store being a “non-raincheck” store. I have however been in contact with the Kmart person who passed me over to their operations folks about having a raincheck e-mailed to me. We’ll see if that pans out, otherwise, that $150 will be gone in a few days.

    1. I was in K-Mart yesterday and asked about this. He said K-Mart only got 600 of them. That would certainly explain why no one’s finding them in stores.

      1. Well anywhere ~50 miles of the #STL / St. Louis, MO area has *none*. A store manager finally called me and said they would honor the $149.99 price at the store I went too (closest to me) when they do receive one. But at this time, there is no scheduled shipping date, so no GENTOUCH78 for me at this time.

      1. USB needs to be hacked as they say USB is only for file transfer right now. So, would need to get inside and add Bluetooth, or Android hackers would have to have a version that allows more USB features? Any news on that?
