Pixel Qi’s 3qi display combines some of the best elements of e-Ink and traditional LCD screens. Basically, the display features two modes: Full color, and high contrast. In high contrast mode, the screen almost looks black and white, but it uses about 5 times less power and you can easily see the display outdoors.

I got a chance to check out Pixel Qi’s technology at CES earlier this year. But that was almost six months ago. This week the company is showing off some new devices with Pixel Qi screens at the Computex Trade show in Taiwan.

Jkkmobile shot a video showing a few prototype tablets that have been fitted with Pixel Qi screens. That includes a tablet with a Wacom digitizer. You can check out his video after the break. It also shows what happens when you take a netbook with a Pixel Qi display from indoors to outdoors.

Pixel Qi has also apparently worked on the viewing angles for the display. Charbax at ARMdevices got to spend a few minutes with Pixel Qi founder Mary Lou Jepsen, and she shows off just how well you can see the screen from a variety of awkward angles. You can find that video below as well. And if you’ve got some time to kill, you can also check out a 12 minute video with Charbax and Jepsen talking about tablets, Pixel Qi technology, power consumption, and other goodies.

So that’s the good news. Pixel Qi’s displays work. They’re real. And they’re kind of awesome. The bad news is there’s still not a single product shipping today that uses one of these newfangled displays. But that could soon change. Jepsen says the company expects a number of product announcements starting tomorrow.

  1. I would love to buy a product with one of these screens… NOW IF A MANUFACTURER COULD ONLY BRING A PRODUCT USING ONE TO MARKET! But I digress.

I love the samples I’ve seen of Notion’s iInk Tablet. I love the sample netbooks with the retrofitted screens I’ve seen. So please, come to market already…

  2. I’ve been watching the progress of Pixel Qi for the past year. While there are a few other new screen technologies coming out in the next year, Pixel Qi seems like the one closest to mass production now without a major cost hit.

Notion Ink said they will be using Pixel Qi on their Adam tablet due out anytime, but haven’t heard yet. I’m surprised that more manufacturers aren’t jumping on these types of displays especially for tablets running power hunger OSes.

  3. This is awesome. Great update. When and where can we buy the pixel qi screens and upgrade our existing systems? Are they on target for this month?
