The Dell Streak Android tablet isn’t all that much bigger than a typical smartphone, so there’s not really a ton of room for things like HDMI ports. But the tablet is powerful enough to pump out HD video to an external display, so Dell is going to offer an optional docking station with HDMI, audio, and USB ports for connecting an external display, speakers, or other devices.
The folks at Laptop Magazine snapped some photos of the dock, and it looks like a pretty nifty accessory for anyone who might want to stream audio, video, or photo content from the tablet to a big screen TV.
I could see the dock coming in handy if you want to show off photos or videos shot with the phone’s camera. But it could also be a useful way to play high definition MPEG-4 or H.264 video in your living room if you don’t happen to have a PC or other media player hooked up to your TV.
Like Laptop Magazine’s Mark Spoonauer, I’m curious to know how the Dell Streak + docking station will look when playing Flash video in full-screen. But we’ll probably have to wait a few months to find out, since the Streak will initially ship with Google Android 1.6. You need Android 2.2 to support Adobe Flash.
Could have at least had the USB Port within the device but then who’ll buy the docking station, right ?? Commerce has to play its hand too *smirk*
if that usb port can act as a host port (but why oh why did they make it a mini-port? maybe its slave only) it could turn the streak into something of a android computer when hooked up to any hdmi equipped screen.
