Is a nettop still a nettop if it’s small, light, and has a low power processor that’s not an Intel Atom or VIA C7/Nano chip? I’m going to go out on a limb and say yes, as long as it’s reasonably priced — and that puts the new ViewSonic VOT125 right on the border. On the one hand, it looks like virtually every other nettop that’s been put out in the last two years. On the other hand, it has a beefier processor and higher price tag — making it a bit more like the compact desktop computers of yesteryear.
The ViewSonic VOT125 is just 5.4″ x 5.1″ x 1.5″. But it’s got an Intel CULV processor inside, along with room for up to 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive as well as WiFi, Ethernet, VGA, and HDMI output.
The computer can handle a number of recent Intel CULV chips, including:
- Intel Celeron 743 single core CPU
- Intel Celeron SU2300 dual core CPU
- Intel Pentium Dual Core Su4100 CPU
- Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU
All four versions are bundled with Intel GMA4500MHD graphics.
The only catch is the price, with the cheapest model running $499 with a single core Celeron processor and the priciest model with the Core 2 Duo processor going for $679. Still, if you’re looking for a tiny computer with a bit more oomph than your typical netbook, the VOT125 certainly fits the bill.

I think the VOT125 would make a great CPU to embed in the dashboard of a vehicle. Connect to a touchscreen monitor. Add a USB broadband modem with external antenna, or mobile hotspot for Internet access on the go. Use Google or another turn by turn nav system. Access your iTunes library. Play movies to HDMI monitors for back seat passengers.
You can get an Acer Aspire AS1410/1810 (or the new Aspire One 752 series) with the same Intel CULV chips, graphics etc, AND a 11.6″ screen and a battery starting at $399.00. These Viewsonics are about $200 over priced as far as I can tell.
The price kind of kills it for me. . . since I can get a nice notebook for that price.
