Over the past year we’ve seen a number of thin and light laptops with Intel CULV processors hit the streets. Some of the most popular chips are the Intel Celeron SU2300, Intel Pentium SU4100, and Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 dual core processors, although there are a few other models as well. What these chips have in common is that they’re all low power versions of chips based on older architecture. But it looks like Intel plans to launch an update to its Consumer Ultra Low Voltage line soon with a series of new chips.

A spokesperson for Intel has apparently told IDG News that the company will launch new ULV processors under the Intel core i3 and i5 lines. The chips will be used for thin and light laptops with larger displays than netbooks.

The chips will reportedly be faster than Intel Atom processors, but not as powerful as other Core i3 and i5 chips. That makes sense, since they’ll also be cheaper than other Core i-series processors and are designed to offer longer battery life. The new chips will be built with a 32 nanometer process, which may make help make them consume less power than today’s CULV chips while at the same time offering improved performance.

There’s no official release date, but it looks like th enew chips should be available this quarter, which means we might start seeing budget ultrathin laptops with Core i-series ULV processors later this year.

One reply on “Intel’s next-gen ULV processors will be based on Core i3, Core i5 platforms”

  1. Intel announced the i5-520um in January and it has been listed as “launched” at their website for a couple weeks. It should be an excellent culv processor – efficient normal 1.06ghz boosting to 1.86 when needed. Two cores, 4 threads. Integrated graphics also boosts speed when needed. But nominal price is listed as $241, much more than atom.
