Dell is finally launching the Dell Streak 5 Android tablet in June, after showing the 5 inch tablet off for months. It will be available in the UK at first, with a wider European launch to follow. The Streak won’t hit the US until later this summer.

Dell describes the Streak as something between a smartphone and a tablet. It runs the same Google Android operating system as a smartphone, but it has a larger 5 inch display. Honestly, looking at the specs, the Dell Streak basically is just a smartphone with a large display. The rest of the specs look a lot like a state of the art smartphone like the Google Nexus One or HTC Evo:

  • Display: 5 inch, capacitive multiotuch 800 x 480 pixel screen
  • CPU: 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • Storage: 2GB of built in storage plus a micro SDHC card slot for up to 32GB more
  • Connectivity: 802.11b/g WiFi, Bleutooth 2.1, HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS, GPRS, EDGE
  • Camera: 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash + a VGA front-facing camera (video chat functionality not yet available)
  • Battery: 1530mAh

Right now it looks like the Dell Streak will ship with Google Android 1.6, but an Android 2.2 update with support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is expected later this year.

Unlike most tablets, the Dell Streak can make phone calls. It also has full access to the Android Market, which means users can download and install tens of thousands of third party apps.

I still haven’t seen an official price tag for the Streak, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the price will vary from region to region.

You can check out a video overview of the Streak after the break.

  1. The spec sheet does look eeriely similar to the generation of smart phones that are currently hitting the market. The 4.3″ screens aren’t even THAT much smaller than this one.

    If you’re interested in the device definitely follow the link to Direct2Dell, and read Lionel’s post. It’s PR, but informative. He’s also right in that this is a exciting time… If frustrating.

    The products in this space are growing up so quickly… We bought a Palm Pre when that hit Sprint, and it was quite a nice device at the time, a year later it’s looking dated. I’m interested to see where we’ll be in 12 months once the A9’s start to hit big, and we’ll see nVidia in cell phones, along with OMAP, etc. Should be fun, and sad because I’m picking up an Evo next month, and will have to sit on the side lines.

    But, that’s tech. Buy the best device that meets your needs today. Tomorrow will always make you weep, and if you keep waiting for tomorrow then you’ll be waiting forever because there is always a next great thing around the corner.

    Hopefully Dell can start selling these in the US soon… Otherwise they’ll need to upgrade that spec sheet in a few months to keep up with the next years crop of cell phones.

  2. Thanks for the post. It’s a fun time in the industry from my point of view. Regarding the OS install, it really is a customized version of Android. Some parts of it build on top of some of the core functionality that’s in Android phones. I’ll blog more about this on Direct2Dell as we get closer to shipping.

    Like you mention, we’ll offer Android 2.2 and Flash as an over-the-air update in the future, but we’ll also offer feature and app updates independendent of the core OS.

    More to come…

  3. Android 1.6 ?

    Most devices comes with 1.6 – it’s old, but there must be a reason.
    It is (for developer) uncomplicated compared to 2.0 / 2.1 ?
    Why….?

    1. I’m a developer and I can tell you that there is not much difference when it comes to developing for 1.6 vs 2.x. The reason some devices are still coming out with 1.6 has to do with when those devices started their development process. Many started last year when 1.6 was the latest, so they decided to keep 1.6 until production to make their testing easier/faster. Once they’ll get a stable product out the door ASAP, they can take a little bit of time and upgrade to 2.2 over the air.

      1. Thank you…

        Lets see(wikipedia):
        1.6 = 15.09.2009
        2.0 = 26.10.2009
        2.1 = 12.01.2010

        OK, 1.6 is _not_ old, but Android is very young 😉
