The Acer Aspire 721 is one of the first mini-laptops from Acer (or any company for that matter) to feature a new AMD Nile processor. And the laptop is available for pre-order from Amazon for $430 plus free shipping.

The Aspire 721 packs an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel HD display and a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 single core processor. it has ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics with 384MB of dedicated video memory, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a 6 cell, 4400mah battery.

The laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and weighs about 3.1 pounds. We won’t know for a little while just how these computers stack up against machines with Intel CULV processors in terms of performance and battery life. But for $430, the Acer Aspire 721 costs just a little more than a typical netbook and offers a higher resolution display, higher performance graphics, and a version of Windows that isn’t crippled. As long as the processor is at least as fast as a typical Atom chip, this notebook seems like it could be a pretty good deal.

  1. I think it is the same form factor as the Acer’s 1810T, 1810TZ, 1410.

I love the design, this one is a let down because of the single core, would love to see how it stacks up against core-2-duos (other processors in the same form factor)

Also waiting in anticipation for the arrandale (ULV core i3, i5 and i7) in this form factor…. (my next lappy I guess..)

  2. Curious that the 721 has a Single Core K125, pretty much every announcement I’ve read until now had that chip in the 521 (10.1″) with the 721 having a dual core K325.

Bit of a letdown really when coupled with the underclocked 4225, suppose we just have to hope this is a financial decision rather than issues surrounding power consumption.

Be interesting to see if any other company (Asus?) pull out of the hat, all of the other AMD based alternatives announced thus far are 12″+

  3. Well, I’m looking forward to seeing these devices get benchmarked… I’d love to see CULV like performance wedded to at least passable graphics… The HD4225 should still be able to crush the Intel HD graphics on the new arrandale class CULV’s that Intel is releasing… So there’s that even if these Nile based AMD chips will still be slower.

At least AMD finally moved their low power processors to 45nm. It was kind of embarassing having them at 65nm where they just couldn’t compete on performance/watt, even if they were clearly a step above ATOM chips performance wise.

  4. How does the integrated ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics compare to the usual ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics on AMD/ATI powered notebooks? Is it more or less powerful?

    1. It’s DirectX 10.1 vs 10, and I’ve read estimates that say it’s the same speed all the way to 25% faster, so it will come down to memory allocation and implementation.
