Just because they might only have sold 60-some units and they’re struggling to break free of the iPad’s monolithic shadow doesn’t mean Fusion Garage is ready to give up on the JooJoo just yet. The 12″ tablet recently went on sale in Europe and they’ve now announced some upcoming changes which they hope will offer some additional appeal.

For starters, they’re working on opening up the JooJoo’s USB port for mass storage devices.  I’m not sure about this addition. Tablets are primarily about enjoying content wirelessly, and I’d much rather access my files via my local WiFi network than by plugging the USB A-B cable in from my external hard drive. In a pinch, though, this would at least be a handy way to grab a few documents or pics from a buddy’s flash drive.

The bigger news is the announcement of a 3G JooJoo tablet which Fusion garage states will be ready by July. I wouldn’t hold my breath, given their previous track record. CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan has also hinted that he’s not opposed to modifying the Linux core to allow external USB 3G adapters to be used.

One reply on “Joojoo announces USB storage support, 3G model”

  1. In other words, because there aren’t 300,000 joojoo fanatics willing to spend $500+ on a marginally useful but oh so cool device (like the “other” one), the vendor is actually hinting that they might make it more useful by enabling the USB ports to function as USB ports. What an amazing concept!

Note to both the vendor and to the “wi-fi rules” set. While I have wi-fi at home, I don’t live in a city, I often travel outside or between urban areas, and already subscribe to a 3G broadband network using a USB device. I know a couple dozens others that are in the same boat, which leads me to believe there are TENS OF THOUSANDS more like me that will not spend money on a device that the vendor is really building in an attempt to suck monthly fees out of me by requiring me to subscribe to another 3G network that they get a piece of.

Bottom line – I WILL pay good money for a functional device that let’s me make my own very informed choices as to how I want to implement it, using standard, off-the-shelf third party devices. I’m waiting.

And I don’t join cults to be cool.

So if you want my business, quit trying to be cute, cool, hip, or whatever you want to call it. I can read specifications, and then I can move on. I can choose not to buy.

And for you reviewers, IMO at least 5 points should be deducted any device that lacks external storage (i.e. SDHC reader) and/or real, functional USB ports. So start from 5 and work down in that case. And quit assuming that everyone only wants to use devices that way you want to!

Sorry if this sounds o-so-negative. I read Liliputing every day and its a great site! But some things set me off, especially assumptions about the reader. The only valid assumption these sites should make about readers is that they all have different reasons for wanting the devices you review, and therefore the most flexible devices should get the best ratings. . . . again, IMHO.

Thanks for the great site and info!
