The folks behind the EasyPeasy netbook operating system are getting ready to release the latest version. This weekend the team pushed out an EasyPeasy 1.6 Release Candidate.

EasyPeasy is based on the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution. Canonical is preparing to launch Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx later this week. An the latest version of EasyPeasy is built on Lucid Lynx code. But while Ubuntu works on most netbooks out of the box, EasyPeasy ships with a number of optimizations that help it run on Asus Eee PC netbooks and other Intel Atom-based mini-laptops.

Version 1.6 has a new boot system and boot artwork, faster boot speed, integration with social networks including Twitter, Facebook, and identi.ca, new drivers for NVIDIA video hardware, and a new user interface which is based on the latest version of the Ubuntu Netbook Edition user interface.

You can find more screenshots of EasyPeasy 1.6 at the EasyPeasy wiki. Or you can just go ahead and download the release candidate.

  1. For a netbook: use standard Kubuntu, switch the menu style to “classic menu”, enable the menu for right-click on the desktop, and move the single panel to the left-hand edge of the screen.

Bonus: you get the KDE application suite, no Mono, no Pulseaudio, multiple desktops that you can set up to different contexts and folderviews, and more vertical screen real-estate.

  2. If you want to update, they actually pushed the 1.6 Final on Monday. Which is odd, considering:

1.) Lucid hasn’t gone Final, only RC. That strikes me as really really odd. Why release a final when what you built upon is still RC?
2.) They just released the 1.6-RC on the 23rd (what your article is about) and
3.) They’ve yet to update their blog on it, instead having only updated on the EasyPeasy Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/easypeasy

Anyways, here’s the DL link for the final/full release of 1.6: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ubuntu-eee/files/EasyPeasy/EasyPeasy-1.6.iso/download

But anyways… Easy is pretty great. I did a LiveCD on 1.6-RC, but will be doing a full install of 1.6 later (once I redownload the new .iso).

    1. Lucid is scheduled to go final on Thursday. Unless there are any major
surprises the Ubuntu 10.04 RC will be identical to the final release, so it
is possible the EasyPeasy team so won’t have to make any changes this
      weekend.

    2. Brad is right. There’s usually no changes from the RC to the final release in Ubuntu. And sorry about being kind of slow on updating the blog :/
