A mysterious netbook called the Asus Eee PC 900AX popped up at the FCC web site this week. There’s not much information available at the moment, but we can guess a few things:

  • It probably has an 8.9 inch display, like all the other netbooks in the Eee PC 900 line.
  • The A in the name probably stands for Atom. The original Eee PC 900 had a Celeron processor while the Eee PC 900A shipped with an Intel Atom N270 CPU.
  • It has wireless capabilities, or it wouldn’t have shown up at the FCC site… although it’s not clear if we’re talking about Bluetooth, 3G, WiMAX, or just plain old WiFi.

And really that’s about it. Asus offers a few models in Europe with X in the name, including the Eee PC 1001PX and Eee PC 1005PX, and these models ship with Windows XP. But the Eee PC 900 always shipped with Windows XP because it was launched before Windows 7 was available. So I’m not really sure what the X stands for here.

My contact at Asus says he’s not aware of any new 9 inch models destined for the US. This could be another model that will be only available in Europe or Asia, despite the fact that Asus took the step of submitting documents to the US Federal Communications Commission for approval.

In related news, Ricardo at Eee PC.it dug up two more new model names last night: The Eee PC 1201K and Eee PC 1201X. Both of these appeared in a document from Asus, but there’s even less information about these notebooks than there is about the Eee PC 900AX.

  1. I’m pretty excited about this. I’m kind of bummed the market has moved towards 10″ netbooks, and while I know lots of people like them, I feel like 9″ netbooks have completely disappeared from the market. I currently have an Eee 901, which I love dearly. But comparing it to an Eee 1000, it is markedly smaller. I hope this means that ASUS, and hopefully other manufacturers, haven’t abandoned the 9″ models completely.

    1. I too am a 901 user and have been hard pressed to find an adequate replacement.

So far just the Eee PC T91/MT and the Asus MK90 (aka Disney Netpal) are recent 9″ models from Asus. But we don’t know yet if the 900AX will be a regular netbook or a tablet. The Asus E-Reader for example goes by the model number DR-900 and aside from the model number there is still no details aside from there being possibly three versions of the 900AX. Since there are two other references that indicate a Linux and Windows version.
