The Lenovo Skylight is a smartbook with a 10 inch display, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, integrated 3G and WiFi connectivity, and a custom Linux user interface designed by Lenovo. The company introduced the Skylight to the world at CES in January, but it’s not expected to start shipping until next month. But Singapore blogger Darryl Kang managed to spend a few days with a pr-production model.

Since we’re talking about a prototype, it’s important to take everything he says with a grain of salt since there’s still time to work out the kinks before unleashing the Skylight on the world. But here are some of the highlights of Darryl’s first look:

  • The Skylight is very thin and light by netbook standards, weighing less than 2 pounds and measuring 10″ x 8″ x 7.5″.
  • The keyboard is nearly full sized and comfortable.
  • There are no physical touchpad buttons, but the touchpad is enormous.
  • Kang says the netbook started to feel slow when 9 or more applications were running.
  • While Flash is supported, Youtube video playback quality wasn’t that great.

I’m a bit disappointed to hear that the Skylight continues to struggle with Flash video playback. I noticed the same thing when I tested a Skylight back in January. I would have expected this issue to have been addressed by now.

  1. you don’t actually need flash to watch youtube videos. vlc, mplayer, xine all play them fine, and you can download them by (1) ‘apt-get install clive’ on Ubuntu, then (2) ‘clive -f fmt18 [url]’ on anywhere that has clive. it’s standard H.264, and the flash player isn’t and never has been particularly good compared to the free software ones.

This is the right approach to flash on android: work-arounds for the big mega-sites, and all these stupid little art galleries with useless wank-off flash splash pages can choose between open standards and a reduced audience.

  2. You know, it’s possible that there are probably more interesting and important things that can be done with a computer than just watch videos.

  3. I’ve been very eager to get my hands on this device. I don’t blame it for the issues with Flash since it’s pretty well-established that Adobe doesn’t focus on optimizations beyond Windows. I wonder how it would handle H.264 or Theora video with a browser that could support it.

I’m also quite impressed at the fact that it only started feeling slow after running 9 apps at a time. I rarely run that many apps on my Eee PC 901, so it should be no different on the Skylight.

  4. Why manufacture a web device that can’t accommodate actual web content? I don’t know about you but that’s sounds really STUPID!

  5. I think it looks nice. Perhaps with a little more memory it could Flash better? I hope it is price right to sell. I think it could do well as a netbook knowing its limitations.
