The Haier X220 netbook features a 10 inch touchscreen display that can be folded down over the keybaord for use in tablet mode, which makes the X220 a challenger to the Viliv S10 Blade, Asus Eee PC T101MT, and several similar convertible tablet-style netbooks. But there’s a major difference: The Haier X220 most likely won’t be sold as a standalone device. If and when it’s launched in the US, you’ll probably be able to pick up the netbook from a cellphone company for a discounted price when you sign up for a long term data plan.
PCD is showing off the Haier X220 at the CTIA trade show in Las Vegas this week. PCD provides phone to wireless carriers, and the X220 is the first netbook that the company is pushing. According to PCD, the X220 is already available to carriers and it can be customized with an EVDO or HSDPA modem.
I got a chance to check out the Haier X220 at CES in January. It’s a nice looking machine with a decent keyboard and decent build quality. Last time I saw the netbook it had a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP Home, although Haier is expected to refresh the netbook with an Atom N450 processor and Windows 7 Starter Edition.
