The vast majority of 9 and 10 inch netbooks with Intel Atom chips and GMA 950 graphics have the same native screen resolution: 1024 x 600 pixels. While that’s generally good enough to view most web pages, some web content doesn’t really fit on a display that small. And some programs won’t even run if you don’t have a 1024 x 768 pixel or higher resolution display.

Asus offers software on its Eee PC netbooks that lets you virtually turn the screen into a 1024 x 768 pixel display in one of two ways. You can choose one mode that will let you slide up and down to see the bottom or top of the screen. Or you can emulate a 1024 x 768 pixel screen by those extra 168 lines into a space that wasn’t really built for them. The result is that text tends to look a little funky, but at least you’ll be able to run programs that require a higher resolution display.

Now it looks like there’s a way to increase the virtual display resolution without using the Asus software. Netbook News reports that there’s a new Windows 7 driver for netbooks with GMA 950 graphics that lets you adjust the screen resolution to 1182 x 864 pixels.

Bear in mind, this doesn’t actually increase the number of pixels that your netbook can natively display. And that means that increasing the resolution will effectively make text and images on your netbook look kind of crappy. But if you absolutely need to be able to squeeze more content onto your screen, it could come in handy.

You can check out a video demo from Netbook News after the break.

You can download the GMA 950 Windows 7 driver version 8.15.10.1912 here.

  1. i’m using windows 8.1 pro in lenova b460e.

  2. display1_downscalingsupported not found in registry what would i do sir?

  3. The camera, wireless and the microphone works with windows 8 in the asus eee pc 900?

  4. If you’re running Linux on a netbook, Jupiter (https://jupiter.sourceforge.net/) allows you to change screen resolution (had to find a control on Calibre that was below the screen), performance mode (maximum performance, high performance, power saver), screen orientation (normal, left, right, upside down), and video display (external, internal, both). It also allows you to quickly and easily disable/enable WIFI, Bluetooth and your touchpad. YMMV.

  5. Hi,
I can’t do anything with my eee. Tried to download the drivers but it doesn’t start. Wow MS great job done. Biggest crap I ever had with win I think. I am happy when I am getting rid of it again.

  7. Pat,  So did the driver work AOK with GMA 945?  I have old,old Acer 8.9″.

  8. maybe a fix for the bad resolution with text is to set the text size from 100% to 125% in the control panel.

  9. Is there something like this for a hackintosh? I still can’t use garage band without plugging into an external monitor.

  10. I download the GMA 950 through the link provided above. I then uninstalled it, due to te crappy resolution, and the fact that the screen was stretched too much. but after uninstalling, the resolution stayed same. I went to my display settings and i cannot change it. its like it is frozen. this is really fustrating

  11. Its so odd that this works. Because I had actually loaded Intel latest GMA 950 drivers and it only got the basic resolution. 1024 x 600 and it was the latest driver available.

  12. Anyone knows if there is similar driver for Win XP? Win 7 seems to waste the battery faster on my eee 1005HA…

  13. Better to just use Firefox and the F11 key to go full-screen. I don’t care for stretching the resolutions.
