wind u123 win7

MSI has released its first netbook with Windows 7, and it’s the Wind U123. In other words, it’s the exact same netbook that MSI has been pushing for the last few months, except it now comes with Windows 7 Starter Edition instead of Windows XP.

Most PC vendors gave their netbooks a slight spec bump with Windows 7 because Microsoft allows companies to bundle low cost copies of Windows 7 Starter Edition with netbooks that have hard drives up to 250GB. The Windows XP restriction was set at 160GB. But it looks like MSI is basically selling the same computer with a new operating system, because the Windows 7 model ships with a 160GB hard drive, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display.

On the other hand, it’s available with a 9 cell, 7800mAh battery, which should help make up for any loss of battery life you would otherwise experience with the move from Windows XP to 7.

You can pick up the MSI Wind U123 with Windows 7 Starter Edition for $379.99 from Neweggfor $380 from Newegg. Or you could just pick up the Windows XP version with a 6 cell battery for as low as $299.99.

I suspect MSI will also probably have a new model to introduce soon. After all, CES is less than a month away.

  1. XP can do everything Windows 7 can do. Infact, for most people, there is really not much improvement as most people just use their PCs to surf the Internet.

I think it is wrong to say XP is outdated or old. Most people still keep their five or ten year old cars and yet it serves them well. Nobody runs and gets the latest model car just because it has been announced.

So why is it when a new OS comes about, everybody gets excited and say that they will always want the latest and most recent stuff.

Try to watch a video on your “ten years old” PC.
      Go away, troll!

  2. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind having 7 starter edition on my netbook if it keeps the price low. I have a desktop and full-sized laptop for hardcore multitasking. Although I understand that a lot of people can’t afford having 3 computes and have to use the netbook for everything. But personally I’d take an version of Window 7 over XP, why run an obsolete operating system.

    1. While XP is old and doesn’t have anymore programs developed for it, calling it obsolete is a bit of an exaggeration. For the average user there’s nothing Windows 7 or Vista can do that Windows XP can’t. It just more a minimalistic OS when compared to all the bells and whistles Windows 7 has.

    2. It is the principle of the thing. Deliberately crippling a complete OS so you can compete with other low price or free OSes while maintaining higher prices on the complete OS just sits wrong with me. I will not support such tactics. YMMV

  3. In Asia, the MSI netbook is hardly talked about now. I feel sad about this cause MSI and Asus really started this whole netbook thing rolling. I hope MSI starts back marketing their netbooks aggresively.

To me, of all the netbooks, MSI still has the best looking machine. The U210 is so perfect, sadly, battery life is crap.

    1. I was thinking about it. And by thinking, I mean my tickets are booked and
I’ll be in Vegas from Jan 5 through the 11th.
