Want a nice, compact netbook for less than $200? Your options are still a little limited, even with all the Black Friday deals going on. If you’re ok with a Ubuntu system, Dell has the Vostro A90 on sale for just $184 right now.
The system ships with an Intel Atom N270, 1GB DDR2 memory, an 8GB SSD, 8.9” 1024×600 LCD display, 802.11b/g wireless, 35WHr 4-cell battery, and Ubuntu 8.04. I’d personally recommend at least moving up to a Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix, but this still isn’t a bad deal for a basic netbook.
If the 8GB stock drive feels a little cramped, Dell will upgrade you to a more capacious 16GB for another $50. Windows isn’t available as an option, but DIY types certainly won’t have any trouble installing via a USB key.
This is actually a Dell Mini 9 with SSD. I wonder if the option to install a 2.5″ drive is avaible inside…
The Vostro A90 and the mini 9 are essentially the same laptop with a different model number.
the vostro a90 is the business version of the mini 9. So the article could be quite accurate in calling it a vostro a90.
Oh wow!! This looks nice!
As Ubuntu is free, an upgrade is just a click away. I use Netbook Remix on my Lenovo S10 and with Thunderbird email, Firefox, and Open Office really need nothing else. My only complaint on Ubuntu is that installing software that is not Ubuntu approved is a bit of a pain.
If this had Gecko Edubook AA battery – we would need to consider this.
Cool. I am looking forward to it because I am an Ubuntu user and also wanna purchase a netbook. so let’s try it out..VFX course
