Samsung is showing off an interesting netbook prototype featuring a 7 inch AMOLED display. I actually kind of doubt that this is a real product so much as a showcase for the company’s display technology. But the devices features a 1024 x 600 pixel display with a brightness of 300cd/m2 and a 100,000:1 contrast ratio.

AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, and the technology is a high quality alternative to the LCD screens found in most notebooks and monitors today. There are also OLEDs, but the active matrix variant uses less energy which is helpful if you’re trying to cram the display into a portable device like a netbook.

  2. Just a reminder. . . A large problem with OLED in the past has been service life. They just didn’t last long enough. I’d love to see that problem resolved, but this article doesn’t tell anything new about it.

    1. I have read that they have resolved that problem. A good source for OLED information (all kinds of OLED) is https://www.oled-display.net .

      My dream netbook or notebook or computer display would have an OLED (or variation of it) screen. It requires less power since it is self illuminating and takes up less space. It can be seen at any angle. IMO; OLED is the future for monitors.

      1. I just love to image how little energy they will consume if you are reading white text on a black background. Only the pixels from the letters will consume! That is TOP!

  3. I have been waiting for an OLED (AMOLED) screened netbook. Since OLED does not require back lighting, it uses less energy and extends the battery time. It is thinner; therefore, more ideal for light weight computers. I hope they actually make them (hopefully not too expensive).

      2. Likely the fabs making the screens are set up for making 7″ screens because they would see ‘broader use’ in the rest of the electronics industry for things like car navigation, tablets, portable video players for home/car, etc.

        As OLED becomes a bigger product you will see bigger and bigger screens for less and less money, then they will jump into computers for real.
