novatel combo

Novatel Wireless has filed documents with the FCC demonstrating a new laptop module that supports both WiFi and 3G wireless connections. Typically you need two separate modules for these different features, but by combining a 3G modem with an 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi module PC makers may be able to cut down on size and price.

The module is currently designed for the Dell Latitude E4300 which is a high end 13 inch laptop. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Novatell make this technology available for other PC vendors in the future. SlashGear also notes that combining WiFi and 3G functions on a single device could pave the way for a laptop with a sort of built-in MiFi module that would let you turn your laptop into a wireless access point while surfing the web over a 3G connection.
