HP officially launches the Mini 311 netbook

09/15/2009 at 12:01 AM by Brad Linder 13 Comments

front

Update: The HP Mini 311 is now available for order for $399.99.

We’ve been seeing leaked images and specs for the HP Mini 311 for weeks now. But today HP has pulled back the veil on this 11.6 inch laptop with NVIDIA ION graphics. As expected, the laptop has a 11366 x 768 pixel display, NVIDIA ION graphics, and HDMI output.

Here’s what you didn’t know: It’ll have a starting price of $399 and it will be available starting on September 23rd if you’re willing to settle for the version with Windows XP. You’ll be able to pick up an HP Mini 311 with Windows 7 starting October 22nd.

I’m still a little baffled about the 92% full sized keyboard. The HP Mini 5101 has a 10 inch display and a larger keyboard than this laptop. I don’t see why HP couldn’t throw in a full sized keyboard. But at $399, the HP Mini 311 will be one of the cheapest laptops around with NVIDIA ION graphics, so I guess I can put up with the keyboard.

Here are the complete specs:

  • CPU: 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
  • Graphics: NVIDIA ION LE with up to 319MB graphics memory
  • Display: 11.6″  HD LED BirghtView Widescreen display (1366 x 768)
  • OS: Windows XP Home Edition SP3
  • RAM: 1GB DDR3
  • Storage: 160GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive
  • WiFi: 802.11b/g
  • I/O: VGA, HDMI, 5-in-1 card reader, Ethernet, combo mic/headhone jack
  • Battery: 6 cell Li-Ion
  • Webcam: HP webam with integrated digital microphone
  • Support: 1 year free hardware technical support
  • Dimensions: 11.4″ x 8.03″ x 0.78″ ~ 1.20″
  • Weight: 3.22 pounds
  • Software: Integrated HP QuickSync app for synchronizing media with another PC

HP has also posted product pages for two versions of the Mini 311 on its web site, although there’s no mention of price or availability yet. The HP Mini 311-1011TU and HP Mini 311-1012TU seem to have remarkably similar specs, but they do have slightly different model numbers, so there must be something setting one apart from the other.

You can check out more photos after the break.

Let’s hope the Win7 version warrants the original Dx10 ION. Dual-core, too.

Please someone help me udnerstand. First, we have the atom processors. Not terribly powerful. Now we have these CULV processors, like on the Acer 1410, which is more powerful, according to Brad’s test. Now… now we have atom processors paired with Ion video. So someone please tell, what is better? The CULV or the atom+Ion? Does each one do soemthing better than the other? Is the Ion better at video, but the CULV is still better for multitasking? Please let me know. Thanks

Googled again, found the specs for the 311-1011TU, one of the many configurations:

Atom 280 (so not only 270)
Max 3 GB memory (!)
6 cell battery
1,46 kg weight

Now I assume this is with the BIG battery…then the weight is still acceptable…

Depends on what you are doing. The CULV (+ 4500 MHD) is going to be better for processor intensive applications. Like zipping files, flash video, and spreadsheet calulations. And the Atom+ Ion is going to be better at games and hardware excellerated HD video (though I think the Acer could handle that, check the review). THe Aton should also have much better battery life.
