Chinese company Lanyu is selling what very well may be the cheapest netbook available. At least, it is if you’re willing to stretch your definition of the word netbook slightly. The Lanyu eBook LY-EB01 is a 7 inch clamshell-style device with a QWERTY keyboard and an 800 x 480 pixel display. It has a 266MHz ARM-based processor and runs Windows CE 5.0.
The computer measures 8.4″ x 5.6″ x 1.2″ and weighs just 1.3 pounds. It has 64MB to 128MB of RAM and between 2GB and 8GB of Flash storage, depending on the configuration. It has an 1800mAh 7.4V Li-Ion battery that can reportedly power the machine for up to 5 hours with WiFi on and another 2 hours if you shut off the WiFi.
Most impressive is the price tag: just 666 yuan, or about $97 US. The product description states that the price doesn’t include wireless. That’ll cost you an extra 60 yuan or about $8.78, bringing the price closer to $106, which is still pretty darn cheap.
Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard tell of a sub-$100 netbook. Last year a company called HiVision started showing off a similar 7 inch netbook with a 400MHz MIPS-based processor that was supposed to sell for $98. But I have yet to see a retail product listing for that netbook anywhere. Of course, it’s possible that the $97 price tag for the Lanyu eBook LY-EB01 is only for re-sellers placing bulk orders. But to be honest, based on the specs, I don’t think this little laptop is worth much more than $100.

Windows CE is a deal breaker, where’s the MS free ones?
Very Apsire One 2007 in looks, but otherwise looks okay. Not sure if I like the Win CE, so that remains a Q-mark for me?
Are there programs and apps to make Win CE funtional in the modern age?
It looks like there is also a webcam on top for videochat.
Would this run Android and/or Chrome OS since it’s ARM based? The Android MIPS port, while commendable, is even less polished than mainstream Android. 🙁
Does that picture look like it’s running Windows XP or is just me?
It’s just you. That’s Windows CE. The version used on clamshell style netbooks like this bears a superficial resemblance to Windows 98, but once you get past the start menu and desktop, the apps and underlying OS are all CE.
not that I would buy one

That price point is pretty close to tempting. As they drift toward the $100 price point, I start thinking about random applications like alarm clocks or mount-in-wall home automation controllers.
There have been netbooks with this spec and design selling on ebay for the $130-150 for long enough…
