A friendly FedEx guy just rang my doorbell and dropped off a package from Lenovo containing an IdeaPad S10-2 and an IdeaPad S12. Lenovo’s been kind enough to let me borrow these little guys for a few days to put them through the paces.
My first impression is that they’re both solidly built little laptops. The S10-2 has a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and a comfortable keyboard, but a tiny touchpad. It has a few nice bells and whistles including a quick-start operating system that lets you boot into a limited environment with access to a web browser and other apps in just a few seconds without waiting for Windows XP to load.
The S12 has a 12 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel screen and feels enormous compared to the other netbooks in my house. But at just 3.4 pounds, it’s honestly not much heavier than my Eee PC 1000H, which weighs in at 3.2 pounds. And before you ask, this version of the S12 has an Intel Atom processor and GMA 950 graphics. The NVIDIA Ion version won’t be available until later this year.
I’ll have more details to share over the next few days. In the meantime, you can check out my unboxing video after the break. Sorry it’s a bit shaky in the beginning, but I promise I put the camera on a tripod after a minute or two.
