mini 5101 on sale

HP is now taking orders for the HP Mini 5101 netbook. This is the company’s business-class mini-laptop. It has a few premium features including:

  • Magnesium alloy chassis
  • 7200rpm hard drive
  • 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi
  • Accelerometer that shuts down the hard drive in the event of a fall
  • 95% full-sized keyboard
  • HP DuraKey finish on the keyboard

The model currently available for $399 features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel matte display, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive and runs Windows XP Home Edition. HP is expected to make the Mini 5101 available with Windows XP Pro, Vista Home Basic, Vista Business, or SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 as well. It will also be available with higher resolution display and high speed solid state disk options.

The $399 price listed on the company’s website is actually about $50 lower than the price HP gave me when they first showed me the laptop last month. But that price just covers the base model. You’ll wind up paying more if you want an SSD, alternate operating system (with the exception of Linux), or other advanced options.

You can read more about the HP Mini 5101 in the Liliputing Product Database, or check out my hands-on with the laptop.

  1. I’m not a fan of the switch from the 2133/2140 styling to this, but I don’t think I’d call it gigantic. Compared to the mini 1101, it is the same width, 1/3-inch deeper (with an extra 26 pixels and bigger touchpad) and about 1/8-inch thinner.

But really, where’s the HD screen? … and Broadcom Crystal chip? … and don’t even get me started on the nVidia ION fairy tale.

  2. yeah, i’m holding out for a 5116 or some such. not buying a gigantic 10″ netbook.

  3. can’t see a difference in specs between this $399 version and the expensive one……………………?

also, what do reckon the chances are of fitting an 11.6″ screen into that chassis, the bevel looks pretty capacious?

  4. And their 4510 (15 inch) ProBook models start at $529.
A $4 difference? That will make the decision hard for many folks.

    1. Nope, that’s a $130 difference. For some reason the $525 and $399 models listed on the HP web site are identical. I’m guessing they’ll start to roll out a few more configurations soon. I was told that the HD screen option, for example, would be available at launch, but so far it hasn’t shown up on the web site.

      1. I expect it is a few typo’s – the $525 one is the SSD model
and the $399 one is the FreeDOS OS model.
That would be just about == $130 difference in the models.
Those “Marketing People” have a hotkey for “recommends Windows…”.
