Asus has finally begun shipping the Eee PC 1004DN netbook that it first showed off at CES in January. The only catch is that this netbook isn’t available outside of Taiwan yet. If you do happen to be in Taiwan, you can pick it up for the equivalent of about $608 from PC Home.
There are a few things that set this netbook apart from the crowd. First, it has a CD/DVD burner. The Eee PC 1004DN also features a fingerprint scanner and a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU and Intel GN40 chipset with X4500M graphics.
The netbook also has a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and an ExpressCard 34 slot. It has a 6 cell battery and weighs about 3.2 pounds.
InsideHW has published a detailed review of the netbook. They were impressed with the computer’s build quality and ergonomics. Despite the disc drive and GN40 chipset, they also found that the computer’s 6 cell battery provided a respectable (if not spectacular) 5.5 hours of run time. the computer was able to handle 720p HD video playback with ease, and 1080p playback after tweaking some settings.
On the downside, the computer packs a sluggish 4200rpm hard drive.
