pc-nj70a

The Sharp Mebius PC-NJ70A is a min-laptop with a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, and all the other things you’d expect from an average netbook. Now here’s what makes it different: Instead of a standard touchpad, the PC-NJ70A has a 4 inch, 854 x 480 pixel touschreeen display below the keyboard. It can be used like a standard touchpad, or as a secondary display for the computer. There are also three buttons below the secondary display instead of the usual two.

The folks at UMPC Fever have picked up a PC-NJ70A and have posted an unboxing video and a metric ton of photos. You can check out the video after the break, but you’ll want to hit up UMPC Fever to see more photos.

The laptop costs over $1000, so I’m going to resist the urge to call it a netbook. But anyway, the laptop also has a stylus that you can tuck away into the case and easy to remove access panels for replacing or upgrading the RAM and hard drive.

The keyboard looks halfway decent, but just halfway. Sharp has made the age-old mistake of sticking a tiny shift key on the right side of the keyboard, to the right of the up-arrow key, which is going to cause problems for touch typists. The PC-NJ70A also ships with Windows 7 Home Basic instead of Windows XP. My guess is that Microsoft doesn’t want ot make cheap XP licenses available for systems with dual displays.

  1. Dear all, i received a Sharp Mebius PC-NJ70A from Japan as present (there it costs 300$). It runs Windows Vista in Japanese, but I’d like to switch it to Windows XP in English. I tried to reboot it from CD but it doesn’t work. Could anyone suggest an alternative? Thank you. Andrea

  2. I have to wonder about the purpose of the touchscreen. Will there be special software on the normal screen which responds to touches on the touchscreen? Or, maybe watching small movie between your thumbs while checking your email or blogging on the big screen ?? 😉
