The HP Pavilion dv2 is stuck somewhere between a netbook and a full featured notebook. It’s got a 12 inch screen and a low power AMD Neo processor. But it also has a high resolution 1366 x 768 pixel display, up to 500GB of hard disk space, optional Blu-Ray, and an ATI graphics card. Unfortunately, with a starting price of $750, it was also priced way out of the netbook category at launch. But last week we started to see some retailers selling the HP Pavilion dv2 for as low as $599, and now it looks like HP is making that price cut official.

Starting on June 10th, you’ll be able to pick up a dv2 from hpdirect.com for $599 and up.

HP is also dropping the price of several other models. The Pavilion dv3t will now start at $649, the Pavilion dv6t starts at $649, and the dv6z Artist Edition 2 starts at $949.

Now if only HP would release the dv2 with a higher capacity battery capable of running for longer than 2.5 hours on a charge.

  1. The new dv2 is available today! Here are the CPU upgrades:

AMD Athlon(TM) Neo Processor for Ultrathin Notebooks MV-40 (1.6 GHz)

    AMD Athlon(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core Processor for Ultrathin Notebooks L335 (1.6 GHz)

AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor for Ultrathin Notebooks L625 (1.6 GHz)

You can also bump up to 4gb of RAM for $50. Right now you get a free upgrade to 2GB.

You can also bump up the video card based off the CPU you choose. Looks like it’s about a $50 upgrade.

Fully specced, it looks to be $830. I’ll have to see how the reviews are before I make a decision.

  2. I’m always tempted by this one – until I look at the spec sheet again!

    – Only 2.5 hrs battery life
    – Over 3.8 pounds (same as many 13″ laptops)
    – Huge size at 11.5″ x 9.5″ (similar to 13″ notebooks)
    – Tiny netbook keyboard on a full-size laptop! Why?

A standard Dell-issued 13″ laptop is 3.97 lbs and similar in size (12.5″ x 9.5″), and comes with a normal keyboard and a Core 2 Duo processor. This computer is just too close to a netbook in performance and too close to a laptop in size, weight, battery life, and cost. The worst of both worlds!

    1. But I guess it is pretty? I don’t want to be all negative.

But overall, just because the screen size is 12″ doesn’t mean the computer is ultraportable in actual size, weight, or battery life…

    2. Completely agree. Too thick as well at 1.3″. My 13″ Dell is no thicker than this, and it has a 9 cell battery.

I’m not even a battery life bigot unlike many netbook fans these days, but 2.5 hours isn’t good enough.

And this thing STILL can’t handle full screen HD flash video playback, which it might have touted as a weakness of the Atom or its typical GPU partners.

  3. The other awesome part of the article is this:

“Starting on June 10, students have the option to configure a dv2z to match their exact needs on http://www.hpdirect.com with options such as a dual-core(5) AMD processor and discrete graphics for extra computing power. ”

So not only will the price be dropping, but you can also get a dual core AMD processor if you so choose!
