HP Mini 2140 reaches the end of the line

06/20/2009 at 12:05 PM by Brad Linder 15 Comments

HP has stopped taking orders for the Mini 2140 and has added the netbook to its list of discontinued products. The HP Mini 2140 is a mini-laptop with a 10 inch screen and Intel Atom processor. But it has some business-class features which help set it apart from the crowd, including a spill-resistant keyboard, an accelerometer that shuts off the hard drive in the event of a fall to protect your data, and a sturdy aluminum/magnesium alloy case.

While you can’t get the Mini 2140 from HP anymore, it looks like some third party retailers still have it in stock, including PC Mall which is offering the Mini 214o for just $299.99 when you buy it with a slip cover and RAM upgrade.

You can read more about the HP Mini 2140 in the Liliputing Product Database or check out my review of the laptop.

Update: The death of the HP Mini 2140 may have been somewhat exagerrated. While it’s much harder to find links to buy this netbook than it was a few days ago, pixel qi fan in waiting points out that you can find some configurations of the netbook that are still available for sale, particularly if you search by model number.

I hope this means a new model is coming out before back-to-school time.

Too bad. Maybe they have something **we** will think is better coming.
Of course, HP will think it is “better”. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think they messed up the timing here. My best guess is they wanted to transition to a newer product launched mid June, and the end of life the older, but the newer product (2150? 5000?) slipped schedule a month, and at least one poster stated a HP sales rep claimed a large corporate customer made a huge purchase, depleting the remaining quantity completely.

I am really looking forward to the replacement, so I hope they don’t mess it up and make it larger, heavier, or shorter battery life.

Brad’s unboxing video was posted last Feb, and I finally bought something else, partly because I got tired of waiting for the high res version, and now it’s gone already? (Hewlett, we barely knew ya ๐Ÿ™‚ This seems like a very short run for a fairly major production of a pro netbook.

Excuse me for being pessimistic, but too many times I’ve seen pretty good stuff dropped and replaced by cheaper-to-produce things with less features. Maybe the 2140 didn’t go over as well as expected and was too expensive to build. This could be recession related–fewer entrepreneurial small businesses starting up, etc.

One could lay one by before they’re gone, but then there’s the funky, not-integrated high capacity battery and a few other minor detractions, and the minor chance that it’ll be replaced by something better.

I doubt it was a sales problem with the 2140 – I knew of a few really major contracts with school districts in the U.S. that involved large purchases of the 2140. And since HP’s brushed metal line of netbooks isn’t targeted towards consumers, I can’t see them being disappointed by the consumer sales numbers. High costs of production could definitely be a factor though. Still, the 2140 was one of the highest-rated netbooks on the market. It was pretty clear that people were willing to pay a premium for the better construction materials.

My guess is that this is making way for another refresh. If it comes this summer, we could see the inclusion of the Broadcom CrystalHD graphics cards that the Mini 110’s are going to be refreshed with later this summer. Or a new model might come in early 2010 alongside the next generation of Atom processors.

This is encouraging. I like the direction this design was going in and would like to see it improved, not eliminated.

Link to product that was discontinued goes here:

KS157UT

The problem is this… there are many more models of the 2140 available as you can see they are still listed for sale here:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF25a/321957-321957-64295-3841267-3955550-3872994.html

Listed as still for sale are:
HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC (KS144UA)
HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC (KS145UT)
HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC (KS157UT)
HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC (FM839UT)
HP Mini 2140 Notebook PC (KS143UT)

Are you sure your information is correct?

I checked out Pixel Qi’s link, and if you click “buying options” it says “this product is not available for online sale”, so I do not think saying it is end of life was premature. I just surfed around looking for a HD version in stock, and had no luck.

I hope the new version is identical, but has built in 3G, and the Broadcom Crystal video accelerator.
