NEC’s first foray into netbook territory was the Lavie Light laptop, which stood out from the competition primarily due to its boxey design and ability to withstand sweat. Now NEC is back with a mini-laptop that’s super thin, super light, and has a price tag reminiscent of ultraportables of yore.
The NEC VersaPro VS measures between 15.8mm and 19.4mm thick (about 0.6 inches to 0.8 inches), and weighs just 725 grams or about 1.6 pounds. The laptop has a 10.6 inch, 1280 x 768 pixel display, a 64GB solid state disk, and a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540. NEC is setting the pre-order pricing at 99,750 yen, which is about $1050 US, but Engadget reports that the MSRP could nearly double to 176,000 yen or about $1856 once it hits stores in Japan this July.
what a sony vaio x505 rip off
I was about to say ‘move over Sony P’ until I saw the price and lack of wrist support… of course the Sony lacks that too. It would be interesting to see user reviews about that. Do you have to port a wrist rest for lap or in-bed typing?
Not sure why the keyboard is forward almost to the edge. I would think this would make it difficult to type on. It appears to have a trackpoint which many people have been asking for on a netbook. I doubt the drawbacks of this unit will make it worth the switch.
The campaign only takes off about 5000 yen ($50).
– There are two models selling. The one priced at 176,000 yen has a load of warranties and business support attached. (still can’t see why the huge price diff)
– The one selling for 99,750 yen has your basic one year warranty.
Also, the 1GB of RAM is soldered onboard and not upgradable (see pic below, behind the white strip).
