jolicloud-mini-9

Jolicloud is an operating system designed specifically for netbooks. It’s based on Linux, but the goal is to integrate web applications like Gmail and Facebook seamlessly into the desktop to make cloud based computing as natural as firing up a program from your desktop.

The software has been in development for months, but according to the company’s Twitter stream, Jolicloud will be launching a new web site soon (and presumably a public alpha or beta soon after).

In the meantime, here’s a list of mini-laptops that will be compatible with Jolicloud:

  • Asus Eee PC 700, 701SD, 900, 901, 904HD, 1000, 1000H, 1000HD, S101, Eee Box B202, and Eee Top 1602
  • Samsung NC10 and NC310
  • Dell Inspiron Mini 9, Dell Inspiron Mini 10v (but not the Inspiron Mini 10)
  • MSI Wind U100, U120
  • Lenovo IdeaPad S10
  • HP Mini 1000 and Compaq Mini 700EF
  • Intel Classmate PC

The team hasn’t tested an Acer Aspire One yet, but like most Intel Atom N270 machines, it should work. You may also have noticed that there are a few HP, Asus, Samsung and MSI models missing from the list. That doesn’t mean they won’t be able to run Jolicloud. It just means some of them haven’t been tested yet.

  1. Hello Brad, hope you are fine since CES. ping me I want to make sure that you you can test the product.
Thanks for the mention and thanks for precision. I think that I you run an Atom that is not the Z520 with the gma500 (dell mini10 or sony P), you should be fine. We have worked to get optimization out of the box for the one we mention, but we will work with the community to get as much supported.

Regarding invites we will serve people registered on a first in first served basis. We will just need to figure out how to scale the whole thing to preserve the quality of the service.

I want also to stress out that this is an alpha, so we are looking for feedback to improve and correct bug. We have introduced a bunch of really cool features that will make sense as soon as the community use them.

We are very excited to have this thing to reach the community and start gathering feedbacks. Yesterday’s announcement from Google regarding support on HTML5 are important to us, as we beleive that the web is the future of UI

  2. I’ve been waiting in anticipation of a beta build of Jolicloud. Hopefully we’ll see something soon – it would be nice to be able to run a comparison of this and Moblin 2.0 side by side…
