Personally I prefer using a mouse to a touchpad, and so I usually pack a USB travel mouse in my bag when I’m planning on doing some work on the road. But some people like the touchpads that are built into most notebook computers these days and feel no need to use a mouse.

But not all touchpads are created equal. Many netbooks have tiny touchpads that are hard to use. And while some laptops like the Asus Eee PC 1000HE have shiny new touchpads that support multitouch gestures (like pinching and expanding two fingers to zoom in and out), many notebooks are saddled with old fashioned touchpads that at best have an area on one side for scrolling.

If you’re stuck with a lackluster touchpad, you could resort to using a mouse, trackball, or other peripheral. But it turns out there’s another option: a USB touchpad. The SmartTrack Neo is a USB touchpad that offers a nice wide surface area and support for multitouch gestures. It also has two nice large buttons to register right and left clicks. Overall, the Neo seems awfully large and I don’t really see the point in carrying it around. But then, I’m a mouse guy.
