mini-1000-storage

When HP launched the Mini 1000 netbook late last year, the company insisted on using a 1.8 inch hard drive instead of one of the 2.5 inch HDD’s more commonly found in laptops. This helps the netbook, which measure just an inch thick, keep its slim profile. But it also meant that the hard drive’s topped out at 60GB and 4200RPM.

Now it looks like HP has found a deal on cheap 80GB 1.8 inch drives, because when you go to configure your order the 60GB option has been replaced with an 80GB drive. Unfortunately it’s just as slow, at 4200RPM. There’s also a new 32GB option for customers who want a solid state disk, but were dissatisfied with the 16GB that was available before.

That means of you’re configuring an HP Mini 1000 with Windows XP you can now choose between a 16GB or 32GB SSD or an 80GB hard drive. If you’re choosing the HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition which runs a custom version of Ubuntu Linux, you can also opt for a smaller 8GB solid state disk.

  1. How posible is to change from 16gb solid state to hard drive? Can it be done?

  2. yea, well newegg sells drives pretty cheap too. it’s a PATA by the way not SATA for those wondering/researching.

either way — i got the 16gb ssd version myself and LOVE it. there’s sd cards and all sorts of things to extend the space (or keep each project on a new card – esp. handy for when working off multiple machines), but the way everything is heading (and my life especially being a web developer) everything is on the internet. what does one need 300gb of space for??? or 80gb for that matter? or 60? though it is nice they are moving up to 80gb… on the flip side, i do hate overpriced hardware (cough cough apple).

store mp3s, videos, photos, etc. on a networked hard drive. media center. etc.
listen to online music, grooveshark, pandora, etc.
google e-mail … especially the IMAP variety
(god why would you ever want to store email on your computer? backing up on a reinstall of an OS sucks)

uh….. erm um……. hmm.. since you aren’t playing video games on a netbook… yea, we just have to have that super fast spinning power hungry 300gb hard drive don’t we? for all that empty space we’re storing.

just wait a little while, everything will be on the internet… look at things like Microsoft Live Mesh and such.. gOS and cloud computing…

  3. way to get with the program HP. Every other netbook has 160G you know. SATA too…
Is the HP mini 1000s disk upgradable to a 2.5″ SATA disk?
