mini-10-upgrades

When Dell first announced the Inspiron Mini 10 netbook at CES, the company promised that it would be available with options including an internal TV tuner, GPS receiver, and high resolution display. But so far the only premium feature to materialize is that higher resolution 1366 x 768 pixel display.

But Sascha at Netbook News.de got his hands on what appears to be a leaked product roadmap for Dell’s Inspiron Mini netbook lineup. And it includes some interesting info about potential upgrades for the Mini 10, as well as hints of a new model with an 11.6 inch display.

It looks like Inspiron Mini 10 customers will soon be able to customize the laptop with up to 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, Ubuntu Linux, and a 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor. If the product sheets are correct, it looks like customers will also have a choice between the Intel Atom N270, Z520, and Z530 processors on some Mini 10 models. The base price of the cheapest Mini 10 will be just $329. I’m guessing that will be for a netbook with an Intel Atom N270 CPU, 512MB of RAM and Ubuntu.

  1. Doesn’t seem like the roadmap is accurate. April 17th has passed, and still no ubuntu.

  2. Why not just reduce the bezel width to 0.4″ (as in the ThinkPad)? Then you would have room to insert an 11.5″ screen in a netbook the size of the Eee 1000HE. Voila — an 11″ netbook!

  3. I’m very torn on this issue.

I currently own an older Macbook and a MSI Wind 10 inch netbook. I love the macbook, but it’s just not practical to use when you’re out and about (in a train or on a bus) and the battery life is less than stellar (plus there’s no 3G options). The Wind on the other hand is light and has better battery life (with a 9 cell battery) but the screen resolution is too limiting to really be useful.

For me an 11 incher sounds like the perfect compromise. You could have a laptop about the size of an A4 sheet of paper and with a useful HD screen resolution that would still be able to be around 3 lbs and with good battery life. Add built-in 3G and I’d be all over it (hopefully with some carrier subsidies to sweeten the deal) 🙂

  4. Sounds great but at what point do these stop being netbooks and become small notebooks? Dell has a nice lineup and although I have no problem with these models I think I’d rather buy a Inspiron 13 for about the same price.

  5. Want to sell a netbook with 2gb of ram? Linux is the way. 🙂

  6. at 11″ its not a netbook in my opinion. just a small laptop. i’d rather they were bringing out more 8″ models.
