While a number of companies have already expressed an interest in developing netbooks that use Google’s Android operating system, Acer isn’t one of them. At the company’s press event last night, Acer officials stated that while upcoming Acer cellphones will use Google Android, the company has no plans to use the OS on its netbooks… yet. They say Android isn’t ready to deliver a full internet experience on a laptop at this point. But that’s not to say that the company couldn’t revisit the issue in the future if other companies manage to successfully deliver a decent computing experience using Android on netbook hardware.

Acer also dropped hints that the company could begin offering its netbooks through additional wireless carriers in the US. Right now you can get an Aspire One Netbook from AT&T, but it seems likely that Verizon could add Acer netbooks to its lineup soon. We already know that Verizon is working with HP to offer subsidized netbooks to customers that sign up for long term service plans.

  1. I agree, actually. Google hasn’t fostered growth of the platform at anywhere near the rate I would have liked them to. Granted, this may have been my own naivety on what kind of real work a platform of this nature might take…

..but I keep *reading* about things like their cupcake branch that will do so much, or devices are shown or mentioned…we still only have the G1, in all the world.

I’m hopeful for the future. I want a thousand giants battling it out with all sorts of devices based on open standards. Mostly because I win. But for the moment, I’d put more trust in the Moblin or maemo or even windows 7 platforms for these machines than anything else.

One step at a time, they’ve already done so much so quickly…
