We’re starting to see netbooks with batteries that can run for 8 or 9 hours on a single charge. That means you can take your computer to work with you in the morning, leave it on all day, and still have some juice left when you pack up to go home. Assuming you work 9 to 5, that is.

But what fun is that? Asus has produced a promotional video showing some of the other things you can do with an all-day battery. Like hanging out with ponies and ignoring dogs that come running up to you while you finish a game of Tetris (or something).

It’s a cute, if somewhat odd little video. But it makes me wonder – what would/do you do with 8 hours of computing power? Watch movies on an airplane? Take your computer on a camping trip? Work from coffee shops? Or plot world domination from the back of a moving vehicle for hours at a stretch?

  1. A battery lasting that long would be primarily to give me hope that a couple of years down the line it might still retain enough charge to be useful, unlike my current laptop that runs for maybe half an hour before deciding that ~60% battery actually equals jack squat.

  2. I would use it for the longhaul flights that I take each year to Canada and back, to catchup on my travelblog and sort through the photos and videos that have been taken on the trip.

  3. An all-day netbook battery would allow me to leave the power brick at homw when I take my netbook to school.

        1. It honestly doesn’t bother me at all, but then it’s only size size of a couple of boxes of Tic-Tacs.

          1. Ever been told by a girl “Is that a power supply in you pocket, or are you just happy to see me?” 🙂

Still even if it doesn’t bother you, wouldn’t it be better NOT to have to carry it? What if you forget it at home? What if you forghet it somewhere else, and it gets lost?

  5. Not been a problem for me yet, as I don’t take flights longer than 4 hrs, and most places I use the thing (like work or bars) have wall outlets in case I have it on for longer. And really, given that size is such an important factor for my netbook, I’d rather keep a spare battery than have a battery jutting out the bottom. But that’s just me…if Dell managed to squeeze an 8 hour battery into the same space, I wouldn’t complain one bit.
